La Ligue GeoGuessr Rules
Season 12

These rules are subject to change. If there's something you don't understand, or if you find a way to take advantage or circumvent the rules that seems overlooked or unintended, do not hesitate to reach out to the organizers on Discord. (@Equipe d'orga).

La Ligue format and game Days

The season is divided into two parts: the regular season and the playoffs.
The regular season takes place over 6 game Days, every other week on Sunday evening (albeit exceptions are possible, these will always be announced in advance).

During a regular season Day, all teams compete against one another on every map to win as many points as possible on the rankings for the Day, which in turns awards points on the overall rankings of the season based on the team standing during each Day (1st, 2nd, etc). The points are awarded according to the team's scores on the different maps.
In season 12, 6 handpicked maps are played per game Day as well as a Team Duel.

The maps played during each game Day are announced 2 weeks prior and are always distributed as follows:

  1. 3 solo maps (2 countries and 1 geographical area)
  2. A coop map on one of the 3 previous countries/areas (randomly drawn)
  3. A special "La Ligue game mode" (see "Modes de Jeu" channel on the Discord server)
  4. Map(s) in No Move or NMPZ
  5. A second La Ligue game mode
  6. World map
  7. Team Duel against another team based on a swiss round format

After 6 game Days of regular season, teams will be placed in playoff brackets based on their standing over the season in order to compete for division promotion or relegation (or the Ligue Championship's Title in Division 1). Matches are played one-on-one against the opposing team in the bracket, with the number and composition of maps varying according to the playoffs phases (these will always be specified well in advance). Note that these promotions and relegations depend on the number of teams in the following season.

La Ligue Game Days rules

Before the game Day

Prepare the lineup

You need 3 players per map, with a maximum of 8 players per game Day. You must disclose the detailed line-up (which players will play each map) in your line-up spreadsheet, provided in your team channel by the organization team,, two hours before the start of the game at the latest.

If a team only has two available players, it may, as an exception, align a joker, a player who is either not officially part of another team or playing or playing in a strictly lower division.
The joker can only play when the team has only two players from its original lineup present, thus, if a third player arrives, the joker can no longer play.
This joker is valid only twice per season, on two different game Days. The joker may or may not be the same person on both occasions.
Exceptions may be granted in the event of conflicts with other events for example, in such cases, please contact the organizers in advance to discuss the matter.
If a team cannot field three players, it must withdraw from the game Day and will score no points.

Streams and recordings

On each game Day, at least one person per team must live stream the game on Twitch, and make the VOD public. If that's not possible, a video recording (with audio) must be put in the VOD tab in the lineup spreadsheet. The video can be set to public or unlisted on Youtube.

Rules and advices

  • With the exception of the Team Duel and Country Streak game modes, all competition maps are handpicked by our mapper teams. Maps can include trekkers, photospheres and unofficial coverages.

  • On each game Day, there are special game modes with their own rules. These are explained in the "Modes de Jeu" Discord channel and in the game Day spreadsheets. Take the time to read them in advance, so you won't discover the modes during the game Day.

  • Training maps are available in the linked channel to help you get familiar with the maps and game modes of La Ligue. Moreover, you can use the server BOT commands to get training links as you wish.

  • Note-taking is allowed during the rounds, both in paper and digital format. These notes must be individual, i.e. you can't take notes on a shared spreadsheet.

  • Any external help is forbidden. External helps include (but does not limit to): googling, streamhacking, using extensions, scripts or methods to cheat or that give yourself an advantage over other players.

For a more detailed list of what does and does not constitute external help, please consult the "Rules relating to cheating" section in the Rules channel.
Finally, adaptations are possible for people with disabilities (especially colorblinded). Please do not hesitate to contact the organization team via tickets.

During the game Day

French Coop

Unless otherwise stated, team challenges are played in the so-called French Coop version : The three team members start the rounds at the same time communicate verbally during the round, and guess at the same time with a countdown.
All three team members can look for clues on the Street View as well as on the map. All three guesses count.
These rules may vary according to the type of game mode played.

Communication via Discord

Communication between team members during the game must be done in the team's voice channel on La Ligue Discord server and nowhere else.
In solo challenges, the three people playing the challenges must be in their team's voice channel and be full muted (mic & headphones). They can unmute themselves once their solo challenge is over.

People who are not playing a challenge must leave the voice channel and should not open the challenge. An exception is made for people who are streaming or recording while no one else in the lineup is: they (must stay in the voice channel and open the challenge on their own, while only having their microphone muted in order to be able to hear what their team is saying. This is to keep track of the information that was shared during the round in the absence of any recording.
In order to keep the challenge results easily readable, they shouldn't enter a good guess but rather guess very far, e.g. in Antarctica or time out.

It is forbidden to share their screen on Discord, except for the Team Duel.

Streaming

In order to prevent any potential streamhack, if you are aligned on a map you are not allowed to go on other stream(s), even if you have completed the map on your side. Unaligned players are allowed to do so but remember to close the stream as soon as possible before the start of your next map.

What to do in case of a bug or unintentional guess?

If, during a round, you inadvertently guess before your mates, you must tell them immediately and, mute yourself on Discord until the end of the round. After your guess, it is strictly forbidden to communicate any information about the location until the end of the round. Similarly, if you launch a round before your teammates, you must mute yourself at the end of your timer and not communicate with them until they are done. Please notify the organization team after the round.

If you encounter a technical issue during a round, report it the organization team in your team channel and provide proof (e.g. a Twitch clip). After that, do not wait for a reply from the organizers and just keep playing the rest of the rounds.

In both of the above cases, those in the team not affected by the problem should continue playing their round as normal. Possible compensations may be applied, depending on the score of the rest of the team, so don't drop the round.

Breaking the rules, sanctions, yellow cards

Breaking the rules in any way may lead to sanctions (nullification of a round, yellow card, suspension, etc.), depending on the severity of the infringement. Bad behavior within the community can also lead to sanctions. These sanctions can be applied to an individual or to a team.

Proven cases of cheating may result in the cancellation of the team's results for the period in which one or more members have cheated, and/or in a ban from the community.

Sanctions against players are decided by the organizers, more specifically by the Sheriffs.
Sanctions against teams can be decided by a committee composed of one member from each team not affected by the potential sanction, as well as the organizers.

Scoring

The scoring of La Ligue GeoGuessr is on a round-by-round basis during the regular season and the play-offs.
A round-by-round map-by-map (RpR-MmP) ranking means that, for each map, the number of rounds won over opponents counts, including the GeoGuessr total score on the seed as a “sixth” round. The game Day ranking is obtained by taking into account the ranking on each map.

A threshold scoring is applied to all the maps. Un scoring par seuil est appliqué à l'ensemble des maps. It corresponds to 10% of the points missing from the round's total score, resulting in ties with players who fall within your score threshold.

Regular season

For coop maps: Each round, the scores of all three team members are added together. This score is compared with that of each opposing team, and the team earns as many rounds points as there are teams that did as well or worse than them on the round.
For solo maps: scores are compared between players playing the same map. Each player earns as many round points as there are players who did well or worse on the round.

Each map, the number of rounds points obtained by the teams over each of the 6 rounds (the total GeoGuessr score counting as a “sixth” round) are added together. Each team earns as many map points as there are teams that did as well or worse than them on the map, with a multiplier of 3 for coop maps. For solo maps, each solo map is counted separately with no multiplier.

To obtain the game Dat ranking, the number of map points oobtained by the teams for the 5 coop maps and the 3 solo maps are added together.

The total ranking on the six maps at the end of the game Day is rewarded by points in the season's rankings. The two best teams are rewarded with 2 points more than the rest of the teams. Tied teams get the same amount of points (e.g. two teams tied in 6th place get the points awarded to the 6th place).

At the end of each game Day, each team plays another team in a team duel. The choice of the opponent is based on a Swiss Round format throughout the season and may depend on the game Day's ranking.
A victory in the team duel earns 1.5 points in the season's ranking.
In case of an uneven number of teams during a game Day, a team is exempted from the team duel and automatically earns the 1.5 bonus points.
This team is determined by the following criterions:

  • Not having been exempted from Team Duel during season
  • The highest number of wins in Team Duels
  • The best ranking during game Day

The season rankings are determined by the points earned during the whole season, then by the number of Top 1 on all maps of the season, and then by the number of Top 1 on all rounds of the season.

Play-offs

During this phase, teams compete directly against each other in a 1v1 format. The matches are played in BO7 (first team to win four challenges wins the game).

The scores of the 3 players in each team are added up for each challenge and then a round-by-round scoring is applied between the 2 teams, including the total GeoGuessr score as a “sixth” round.
For the solo maps, each map is scored separately on a round-by-round basis. The team that wins more solo maps than its opponent earns the point.
In case of a tie at the end of a challenge in the number of rounds won, no team wins any points. Distance and time are not tie-breakers.

In case of a tie at the end of the game, a tiebreaker is held between the two teams.
Each team will select 3 players, each of whom will play a different seed of 5 locations against a player from the opposing team:

  • Move 2' (An Informed World)
  • NM 1' (A Pro World)
  • NMPZ 30" (An Arbitrary Rural World)

We do a round-by-round scoring on the 18 rounds of these 3 seeds, with the team with the most rounds winning the match. The 10% threshold scoring is also applied on all these rounds. In case of a tie, we take the sum of the 3 GeoGuessr total scores.

Player transfers

  • Transfers are only allowed between seasons.

  • Each team must have between 3 and 8 players.
